Presentation to Ayrshire Branch of Parkinson’s UK

Lady Captain, Lesley Duncan, was delighted to present a cheque for £1,445 to the local branch of Parkinson’s UK at their recent monthly meeting in Portland Church hall, Troon.

This fantastic amount was raised by the Ladies Section from the raffle and tombola at their Open Day in April, and from members’ donations at Captain’s Prizes held in August.

Lesley is pictured presenting the cheque to Mrs Jeanette Appleby, Chairperson of the Ayrshire Branch.

Many thanks are due to everyone who contributed to the Captain’s charity in 2011. The money will help Parkinson's UK continue to provide information, support and advice to sufferers of this debilitating disease and their families.

The Winners of the Under-16 Trophy

The Under-16 Team triumphed 3-1 over a gutsy Prestwick St Nicholas, all four boys giving their all with very mature performances.

Team Captain, Blair Gavin, won the lead match with comfortable 3 & 2 victory

Robbie Blackwood was second out and was also a comfortable 3 & 2 winner.

Match three became pivotal. Stuart Hope, though boasting four hole lead at the 10th was pegged back to all-square by the 16th. However, a fine 7-iron to 40 feet at the 17th was duly dispatched for a birdie 2 and an unassailable 1 up lead, ensuring that the trophy came to Barassie. A solid par 4 at the 18th completed an excellent 1 hole win.

In the final game, Elliot Masterson was really up against it from the start, giving away 10 shots. Despite reaching the 16th a credible 5 over par, still lost his match 3 & 2.

This is an excellent result for a very young team, coming out on top under the nerves and pressure of competitive golf.

Wallace Thornton Trophy

Last weekend, the Wallace Thornton, Scratch under-18 team and Under-16 finals were held at Loudoun Gowf Club with Barassie in competing in both finals.

In the under-18 Wallace Thornton, Barassie went down a fighting 1-3 to Welbeck in a very tightly contested match, with two of the matches being decided on the last hole

Euan Walker lost 3 & 2
Callum Gorrie won 2&1
Euan Henderson lost 1 down
Stewart Russell lost 1 down.

Given our oldest boy is only 16 and their youngest 17, it was certainly a superb performance and bodes well for next year.

A very well done to all four boys ...Champions in the making!

A gallant defence falls just short

Very much like the previous day, the early starters would have the more challenging conditions. And when 2010 Champion Robbie Faulker drove off, the winds were lighter and the skies showing encouraging signs of blue. Brian Findlayson, the Course Manager, had prepared the course superbly, with the greens registering a credible 9.5 on the stimp meter.

24 players had survived the cut from the previous day and the early scoring was proving uncharacteristically high. Five shots lay between first-round leader, Robbie Faulker, and seven other players who would have a realistic chance of lifting the 2011 title. And so it proved, with all the main challengers reaching the turn in level par or better. Turning back into the wind from the eleventh tee was to proved pivotal with eight players becoming four, shots being dropped at a variety of holes.

Coming down the final few holes, any of the remaining four had a chance of winning: Stuart Dixon was making great use of that broom-handle putter with a series of pressure saves; David Miller was grinding out the pars; Euan Brown was making a charge on the birdie trail; but sadly Robbie Faulker was hitting the wall. Pushed tee shots were beginning to cost the reigning champion dearly. And by the 17th tee he had been overtaken by his challengers, to finish with a disappointing 8 over for the day.

By the 18th it was down to two, Euan Brown and David Miller, and a nail-biting finish. David recorded a second 73 to complement his 76 on the first 18 ...a total of 149. However, Euan followed a 77 on the first 18, with a superb 2-under 70 on day two for a Championship winning total of 147.

Certainly a worthy winner and champion for 2011. Well done, Euan.

It's all about the putting!!!

A three-hole deficit is not insurmountable and with honours even at the tenth, both ladies scoring par 4's, could the match swing either way?
Alex certainly had the upper hand. And it was then she moved up a gear. A birdie at 11 was set up by a superb approach ...a solid three-wood second shot at 12 followed by an eagle putt put Alex 5 up as the ladies returned to the traditional part of the Links Course.
Again, both players split the fairway with their drives ...both players failed to find the green with somewhat average approaches. Helen felt she had to attack, but her aggressive next shots would cost her a bogey five. Meanwhile Alex chipped to 6 feet and the trusty putter did the rest.
A 6&5 win is the official result, but that does not reflect the margin in real terms. Helen played solidly putting up a strong fight; she only made one real error. Unfortunately she was against an opponent who was at the top of her game on the green.
All in all, it was an excellent final, played in a very friendly manner and a great advert for ladies golf at Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club.

The Ladies Championship 2011

The weather gods were more than kind when the Ladies Club Championship got under way on Saturday afternoon in what was seen as a 'David and Goliath' challenge between Helen Love and Alex Glennie. Not the case!!
Fresh from her success with the Scottish Seniors Team, Alex was certainly regarded as the favourite. However, Helen would prove to be a very gutsy competitor and make more of a game than the statistics would suggest.

Both ladies would hit the fairway with excellent drives, reach the green in regulation and complete the hole in par 5's. The next two holes were pivotal in the front 9. Whilst an unlucky bounce took Helen's tee shot into the fairway bunker at the second, her recovery shot found the burn making any chance of a result beyond reach, a concession giving Alex a one hole lead. However Helen would take advantage of Alex's wayward tee shot at the third. A 'grip it and rip it' approach shot with a three wood to the centre of the green followed be two safe putts restored the game to square.
The ladies traded pars for the next three holes and when Helen holed out from the bunker at 6, maybe it was going to be her day.

Seven and eight was the story of poor, followed by good putting. Helen uncharacteristically three-putted 7, while Alex sank a trickly 12-footer at 8 for a birdie and a 2-hole advantage. A wayward second shot at the ninth, her only one of the day, allowed Alex to extend her lead to three at the turn.

On a somewhat cold Summer Saturday, David Miller got the 2011 Club Championship under way. And as you expect from a past winner, a fairway-splitting drive was an encouraging start to his latest attack on the title. However, as would prove, the early morning weather, with its strong winds and low temperature would provide a significant challenge to all the competitors.

Nevertheless, David guided the ball round the Links Course to in a credible 76, whilst playing partner for the day, Calum Sharpe was one stroke more.

36 qualifiers would brave the elements returning a variety of scores, with 2010 Champion, Robbie Faulker's 72 the best of the day.

The Loss of a Golfing Legend

Sadly the golfing world has lost one of its golfing friends. Severiano Ballesteros was loved by millions around the world, and no more so here at Kilmarnock (Barassie). Everyone at the Club would like to recognise the amazing achievements of this golfing legend and pass on our sympathies to his family.

Everyone will have their own memories of the 'Man from Spain' especially as we are very lucky to have him visit the Club in 2004, with his son, who was then competing in the World Junior Open. We also have many photographs of the great man.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL LADIES OPEN DAY AT KILMARNOCK BARASSIE

The sun shone brightly all day and the format this year was a 2-ball better ball stableford competition. which seemed to prove popular with the competitors.

Many competitors remarked on the excellent condition of the course and the immaculate greens in particular. The superb catering and delicious home-baking was also much appreciated and envied by the visitors who were welcomed and served by Club Steward, Glenn Ranson and his staff.

Ray Turpie and Scott Faulds acted as official starters and ferried the ball-spotters out to their positions on the course throughout the day.

The impressive array of prizes was supplied by club professional, Gregor Howie. The winner of the Green Lamb Golf bag, kindly donated by Lady Par, was won by Kilmarnock Barassie member, Miss Jan Smith.

The main prize-winners were Marilyn Miller and Morag Nicol of Beith Golf Club who scored 45 points and they are pictured here with Past Captain, Helen Love and Lady Captain, Lesley Duncan.

Ladies Open Day raises over £700 for Parkinson’s UK

The recent Ladies Open Day held at the Club attracted an entry of 100 ladies from golf clubs all over Scotland.

Not only did this raise the profile of the club but the raffle and tombola raised an impressive £712 for the Lady Captain’s charity in 2011 – Parkinson’s UK.

A WORTHY NEW CHAMPION

More good golfing news for the Club. Jamie Mackay is the new Ayrshire Strokeplay Champion after winning the title at West Kilbride in a play-off with Michael Smyth (Royal Troon) on Sunday. Both players tied on a one under par total of 141 after two rounds with Jamie eventually claiming the title at the sixth extra hole. Jamie is pictured here receiving the trophy from David Miller, Ayrshire President, and Past Captain of Barassie.

The top sixteen players also qualify for the Ayrshire Match Play Championship which takes place May 2 – May 5, over Troon Portland. Joining Jamie in the draw from K(B)GC are Euan Walker, Euan Brown and David Wilson. The complete draw can be found on the AGA website.

David Wilson Wins Scottish Boys

Congratulations to Barassie junior member David Wilson who produced one of golf’s great fightbacks yesterday to win the Scottish Boys Championship at the second extra hole at Dunbar.

The 16-year-old had been eight down after 15 holes of the first round of the 36-hole match and seven down with just 14 holes remaining. However he put together four birdies in the next eight holes to apply the pressure.

“I knew all along that once I got a couple of holes and managed to get some momentum I could push him,” Wilson said.

“Even when I lost the fourth this afternoon [to go seven down] I thought it was possible.”

However it was towards the end of the afternoon round that Wilson’s unshakeable self-belief finally took its toll on his 18-year-old opponent. Johnston seemed to have stemmed the flow when winning the 15th hole to reclaim a two-hole lead, but he missed a three-foot putt for the match at the 17th, having needed only to two-putt from 20 feet for victory.

Another bogey at the last, after he found a fairway bunker off the tee, allowed Wilson to take the match into overtime – the first final to do so since Andrew Coltart won the title in 1987 – and both birdied the first extra hole, Johnston missing a 12-foot eagle putt. The second, also a par-5, was playing hard at 541 yards into the wind but while Wilson reached the front of the green in two, Johnston had a near-impossible chip back down the slope after hitting his third through the green and was unable to get down in two.

More than 100 years of history was celebrated at their AGM when the Ladies voted to dissolve their Club. They could then become Members of the Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club under its new Constitution.

As one part of the proceedings, the Ladies agreed with the Committee’s recommendation that the remaining funds from K(B)LGC should go to the integrated Club and towards the purchase of new furnishings as part of the Clubhouse refurbishment programme.

HOW THE PAST CAN LOOK FORWARD TO THE FUTURE

An impressive twenty-six Past Captains were photographed with in-coming Capyain, Lesley Duncan, including Betty Ramsay who was Captain in 1964 (front row 3rd from left).

The evening was rounded off when members were treated to a trip down memory lane by Past Captains Nan Rogerson, Evelyn Auld and Eila MacLennan, who entertained everyone with their favourite memories of former Lady Members, many of whom donated trophies to the Ladies Club as well as reflecting on how things were in past decades for Lady Members of the Club. Lasting friendships have been formed over many decades and all agreed that new Lady Members receive a warm welcome at the club.

Everyone felt fortunate indeed not only to be offered equality and full membership in the current year, but also to be all sitting in the Ossington Lounge, which apparently was out of bounds for Ladies unless accompanied by a Gentlemen Member in days gone by!

The year ahead promises to open an exciting new chapter in the history of the Club and in paraphrasing from the Jubilee Book, Lady Captain Lesley brought the evening to a close by mentioning the 125th anniversary of the club in 2012 and saying that long may the Ladies at Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club continue to enjoy the “swing music of the links!”

105 Ladies celebrate 105 memorable years of KBLGC

On Thursday 24 February 2011, a record 105 ladies attended a packed Annual General Meeting of KBLGC. Out-going Captain Helen Love presented the new Lady Captain Lesley Duncan with her Captain’s Badge and the members also warmly welcomed Sheena Hope as Vice Captain for 2011-2012.

Following the implementation of the Equality Act 2010 legislation and the resolutions passed at the SGM in January, the Ladies subsequently voted to formally dissolve the Ladies Club.

Following the business part of the evening, the Ladies all moved through to the Ossington Lounge where a light supper was served. A special celebratory cake, decorated with the club logo was cut by immediate Past Captain Helen and Lady Captain Lesley before being enjoyed by the ladies present.

THE START OF ANOTHER CHALLENGE

The AGM last Wednesday, February 23, saw the meeting welcome Douglas Orr as the Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club Captain for the season 2011-2012.

The Orr family has been associated with the Club for three generations and Douglas expressed his pride in being asked to take on the office of Captain seeing this as the pinnacle of his membership, which spans more then 50 years.

After thanking David for all his efforts, the new Captain highlighted the fact that this was very much a transitional year for the Club and there were many challenges ahead. He commented on the success of the communications 'revolution' and the hope to get more Members involved with the Club, highlighting a survey document which was distributed with the subscription notices. Douglas also mentioned the need to restructure the Club and would be setting up a Working Group that would look into such issues as voting rights and the preferred area.

Douglas introduced the three new Committee members, Brian Wallace, Ewan Preston and Graeme Hope and followed that with naming Alan Hill as his Vice-Captain.

Everyone concerned, I'm sure will support the new regime in their dedication and efforts to progress the Club.

THE END OF AN EVENTFUL YEAR

The Club's AGM last Wednesday, February 23, saw Captain David Miller step down after an eventful year in office in which he has lead the Club through the Equality issue, completed major improvements on the golf course and introduced necessary reparatory work to areas of the course which were under serious threat. He also brought major improvements to the Clubhouse, lead the movement to a more open and informative style of communications and management and was the ambassador for the Club during a prestigious R&A golf tournament.

Speaking at the meeting, David expressed his enjoyment during the year as well as recognising the contributions of many others, especially a hard-working Committee and Sub-Committees. He made special mention of Craig Gilmour, Geoff Russon and Stuart Craig as well as Vice-Captain Douglas Orr. He also highlighted the work of the Equality Group and everything they did to ease in the changes to the Constitution.

David will still be active in golf administration, being President of the Ayrshire Golf Association, not to mention the 'cunning plans' the incoming Captain has for his wealth of experience.

NO MORE WET FEET!!!

The final part of the drainage project has been completed. This saw a series of new pipes being laid, a small holding tank put in place and a pump installed, all leading that annoying water some 300 metres away to the burn, adjacent the the 13th green.

The change has been spectacular ...no more heavy puddles, no more wet feet, no more preferred lies and no more constant reparatory work for Brian Findlayson and his green-staff.

Not only has the system moved all the residual water that has lain there, underground for what seems an eternity, but only deals with all levels of rainfall almost immediately. In fact, anyone playing 13 or 14 will have surely witnessed the torrent of water coming from the piping.

Certainly a job well done, especially with the reconstruction of the 18th hole completed.

A BETTER WAY TO FINISH

The reconstruction of the 18th hole on the Barassie Links course is all but complete. The new layout saw the building of five new bunkers complimented by a series of rolling mounds. The hole now takes on an improved style and a different challenge. With a tighter landing area and a threatening pot bunker the 'big hitter' just might have to rethink their strategy, while the shorter hitters still require an accurate approach to prevent a closing disaster creeping up on them.

The new turf is knitting very well and the imported bushes rooting successfully. The updating of the layout for 'Stroke-Savers' and other aids has been completed. And with the issue of the drainage resolved, Kilmarnock Barassie Links course now has a finishing hole to be proud of.

VANDALS ATTACK

Friday evening saw some vandals make an unsuccessful attempt to break into the Club facilities. Target one was the caddy-car shed ...failed! Target two was the Greenkeeper's facility ...failed!

So, using one of their two brain cells, they opted to steal a tractor. One can only assume that they were attempting to access some form of transport to take themselves North.

An unsuccessful attempt to cross the burn at the 13th fairway saw them seek an alternative route over the 13th tee, down the access path and through the woods. Now the remaining single brain cell failed to respond and the accelerated, unaware they were driving towards the burn ...at speed.

As the picture shows, tractors do not fly and they crashed into the banking. Did they suffer injury? Let's hope so.

If anyone hear any about this they should contact the Club.

Burns Supper

The Junior Section of Kilmarnock Barassie Golf Club was hosted by Junior Convener, Craig Gilmour last Friday evening. The boys, all 28 of them, enjoyed a pleasant meal as well as having their golfing knowledge put to the test with a quiz and a picture board competition. They had a target golf pitching challenge, but had to use left-handed clubs.

The Equality Act 2010 and K(B)GC

A major change to the structure of the club is coming closer, brought about by the introduction of the new equality legislation. And dropping through every member's letterbox early next week will be a summary of the current and future position together with the Committee proposal to take the Club forward and secure our financial stability.

The midnight oil has certainly been consumed by everyone involved, with just about every possible option being closely evaluated before agreeing the solution to a very difficult problem that has been brought to our doorstep by a change in legislation.

Key players in this complex scenario have been the members of the Equality Working Group and much appreciation must go to them; Stewart Lightbody, Helen Love, Colin Adam, Reg Short and Fraser Williamson.

It is absolutely critical that Members are aware of the implications and are given the opportunity to voice their thoughts and opinions. Everyone within the Club will be affected in one way or another, and this is your chance to influence the future.

Members will be asked to submit written comments on the proposals by Wednesday 1st December 2010. Email responses should be sent to; secretary@kbgc.co.uk. All feedback, while positive or negative, will be provide the platform for drafting the resolutions that will be submitted to a Special General Meeting to be held very early in the New Year.

It cannot stressed strongly enough ...Your Club Needs You!!

TWO DOWN ...ONE TO GO!

Under challenging and frequently inclement weather conditions the brave men from Souters continued with the drainage project and completed the work on the 3rd and 13th holes of the Barassie Links. A walk down the burn will clearly show everyone the levels of improvement to the condition of the fairways with the piping dispelling water at a constant rate. In fact, several Members have commented on the new-found 'firmness' of the 13th fairway.

The project has now moved to the area round the 18th fairway and practice ground, where the pipes are being laid and digging is well advanced for the installation of the tank and and pump ...and the excavated earth being placed for the building of the new bunkers are the reshaping of the 18th.

While a couple of weeks should see the project completed, a some additional reparatory work will be required to get the course ready for play. Much to the appreciation of everyone, the contractors have managed to keep seven holes within that loop open for play at the weekend.

On behalf of Barassie, David welcomed the Captains from Prestwick St Nicholas, Royal Troon and Western Gailes, together with the Vice Captain of Irvine before James Morrison entertained the Members with an 'Ode to Golf'. Everyone enjoyed a very pleasant dinner before the interval, which included a 'commercial' for the forthcoming Quiz Night. A few mind-testing questions about the history of our favourite game saw Scott Macintyre's team edge out Gary Torbett's 3-ball in an extra hole play-off.

Tommy Wilson, the guest speaker, had everyone rolling with laughter as joke after joke and story after story flowed from his eloquent tongue.

Following the formal presentation of the various cups and silverware, Past Captain, Robbie Fulker brought evening to and end with a vote of thanks.

The memories of last year's severe winter still remain a legacy in the minds of most Members. While a number of greens on the Links Course were affected, excellent work from Brian and his staff saw these area brought back to normal.

However, two areas on the Hillhouse still remain in need of some TLC ...the eighth and ninth fairways. Just about to start is a programme of coring and fertilising, in preparation for the winter. While some improvement is likely to be seen in the short term, the main improvement will become obvious in the Spring of next year.

Water! ...Water! ...and more Water!!

Picture above is the main drainage pipe which been laid into the thirteenth fairway. Fed by several other artery pipes, it dispels water into the burn adjacent to the first bridge.

It will be extended another 100 metres the length of the fairway and connected to more artery pipes. There only be one exit point for the water, thus maintaining the integrity of the existing sleepers. Because of the large diameter of this main drainage pipe, it is perfectly capable of coping with the potentially large volumes of water.

With virtually no rainfall at the end of last week and into the weekend, the immediate effect of the drainage is easy seen. Water is being dispelled at a rate of 5-6 litres per minute.

With the project scheduled to continue for the next month, the contractors will move to the third fairway next, followed by the eighteenth.

Every effort is being made to keep at least seven holes on this 'loop' open at the weekends.

The Drainage Project gets underway

Last week saw a hive of activity around the Greenkeeping compound, with the delivery of many tonnes of sand and gravel not mention enough piping to run to Troon and back.

Souters, the approved contractor for the drainage project, were on site and ready to tackle the serious water problems we have been experiencing over the past few years.

Work began on the thirteenth fairway. The first turf was cut last Wednesday and with the accuracy of laser measuring the first trenches were dug and large diameter main drainage pipe laid. A series of smaller diameter feeder pipers followed. In fact, within a short space of time there was water seepage into the trench highlighting the amount of water just 'lying there'.

West Kilbride retain the Tankard

Having regained the Goldenberry Trophy last year at a wind-swept West Kilbride in appalling conditions, they completed the double and returned north still with the Tankard, which had been presented by the late John Wright.

Conditions at Kilmarnock Barassie were cold, windy but dry ...yet a stiff challenge. The Match, played as foursomes between four teams, and to a finish, was contested over the Dundonald Course, one of the three configurations available to Barassie members. With a par 69, which takes in the 'Hillhouse 9' and the 'New 9', this still an excellent test of golfing accuracy.

West Kilbride ran out winners by three holes. Match 1 went to West Kilbride by one hole; matches 2 and 3 were halved; match 4 went to West Kilbride by two holes.

The Captains' match saw a Barassie victory for David Miller and Douglas Orr by two holes.

The late John Wright had a vision many years ago. Being Captain of two great Ayrshire Golf Clubs, West Kilbride in 1971-72 and Kilmarnock Barassie in 1973, John wanted to encourage the mutual golfing bond that the Clubs shared and donated a silver tankard to be contested annually ...in a very specific way. There would be five matches played as foursomes, to a finish with the total 'holes up' being the winning factor. However, the Captains' match would be a social affair and only count in the event of a tie.

The trophy was named after Goldenberry Hill which overlooks the north end of West Kilbride Golf Course.

'If you want to get ahead, get a hat.' ...was an advertising slogan in the UK in the 1940s, when most men still wore hats - caps, trilbys or bowlers - by Dunn & Co, hatmakers. It implied that, in order to advance in life, you needed a hat to help you on your way.

I somehow think this is not what they had in mind.

Following a thrilling halved match in the first leg of the final at Irvine Bogside, The Barassie Links course posted a formidable challenge in the testing windy conditions for the deciding matches and outright winner of the eagerly contested Ayrshire Summer League Trophy. A tightly fought encounter, however, saw the home side take best advantage of their local knowledge as well as coping with the vagaries of the Ayrshire winds. Barassie took the honours with a 3 ½ - 2 ½ win, which gave an overall 6 ½ - 5 ½ result.

Stuart Miller gave the home team the perfect start by taking an early lead against Gareth Lamb in a rock solid display. Wins at 14 and 15 eventually sealed a fine 4 & 3 win. Barassie's Jamie Mackay and Bogside's John Shanks lined up in what looked like the match of the day. Jamie took the first five holes in a one-sided encounter and recording a 5 & 4 victory ...and maintained his 100% winning record in this season's matches intact.

Two matches to nil ...it was looking good for Kilmarnock Barassie!!

But Bogside had other ideas, and fightback began!!

Promising Barassie youngster Euan Walker ran up against some superlative shot-making from the visitor’s Alan Connery. Some inspired golf saw Alan build a commanding five-hole lead by the seventh. However, not to be outdone and always aware of a possible count-back position, Euan remained remarkably calm, dug in, reduced some of the deficit but despite his best efforts eventually succumbed on the 15th green.

In match four, an out of sorts Andrew Wright gifted Colin Gray the first two holes of their match before fighting back to level the contest by the fifth. However, the Irvine player’s greater consistency in the tough conditions allowed him to ease away to a crucial 4 & 2 win.

Two matches apiece ...and it's getting nervous!! Two deciding matches are out on the course.

Home Club Captain David Miller played some fine, steady golf in the anchor match to build an early lead against Gordon Dunlop. Miller. Also mindful of the potential for a count-back, David took advantage of his vast matchplay experience to build on the team lead and secure an important 5 & 4 victory for his Barassie.

Up ahead, Euan Brown, recent winner of the Fulton Trophy, and Stephen Spence were producing some top quality golf. As the overall contest developed it was clear this was likely to be the pivotal match. Brown held a two hole lead with three to play, but excellent birdies from Spence at 16 and 17 saw the match head up the 18th hole all-square. Both players found the green with their approach shots to set up birdie chances ...Spence’s effort just slipped past ...Brown nudged his tricky downhill putt to the hole side. The halve point was just enough to give Kilmarnock Barassie the narrowest of victories.

Overall an excellent Final played in great spirit throughout

A DESERVING CHARITY

On a sunny day at Kilmarnock Barassie Golf Club the Lady Captain, Helen Love is pictured handing over a cheque to Moira Robinson the local Service Manager of Alzheimer, Scotland..

A total of £1190 was raised through the generosity of Lady Members of Kilmarnock Barassie at Ladies Captain’s Prizes and the Ladies Open Day.

Helen wanted the money to be spent locally, choosing Alzheimer Scotland, based at the Rowallan Centre in Kilmarnock. as a deserving and appropriate charity.

Moira Robinson is the Service Manager at the Rowallan Centre in Kilmarnock, which provides social day care and evening care for people with dementia. They provide a range of social and therapeutic activities. Entertainment, light exercises, musical therapy, in fact any activity that service users can take part in without feeling threatened or stressed by, can be part of the session.

Well Done to everyone concerned and let's hope this donation will help Moira and the organisation keep going with the excellent help they give to those suffering from this dreadful debilitating disease.

The Greenlees Leagues ...so near and yet so far!

Pictured are just some of the Ladies who represented Kilmarnock Barassie Golf Club in the highly competitive West of Scotland Greenlees Leagues.

Though first established in 1931 by Isabel Greenlees, Barassie have been competing in the leagues for over 20 years. There are three leagues each of eight teams with the team being made of of nine players. Very much a scratch format, over the season each team will play eight matches and with relegation and promotion a key feature, every match is very keenly contested.

Milngavie Golf Club were the eventual winners of Division One. Barassie's final match was contested against old rivals Troon Ladies and a 7-2 victory allowed them to secure overall third spot, an agonising three and a half points short of golfing glory.

Maybe so near and yet so far, but there is always next year!!

The Fulton Trophy is the major match-play competition contested between 'First Class' golfers - those members with a handicap of nine or less, and is played off scratch.

After taking the consolation position in the Club Championship, Euan Brown, certainly a golfing star in the making, had the desire to complete a fine season with victory in Fulton Trophy. His opponent, Club Captain David Miller, with his sets on a fifth Matchplay title, had other ideas.

It's never a bad thing to come out strongly right from the start and Euan, with his game finely honed following his year in the American college system, certainly did that. Excellent birdies at the opening two holes gave him an early, but temporary advantage.

DJM reduced the deficit with a birdie at the difficult third, halved four and five before a pin-point tee shot at the Par 3 sixth squared the match.

It was a titantic encounter with no quarter surrendered. All square at the turn ...and nine holes from glory or disappointment. as they turned to face the wind on the way home.

It didn't take el ninjo long to grab the initiative. A birdie at ten saw Euan regain a one hole advantage. Again this was short-lived as some uncharacteristic slack play from Mr Brown, combined with solid pars at eleven and twelve allowed David to take the lead for the first time in the match.

Golf can be such an unpredictable game as it can swing to either player by a matter of inches. Miller's ball just found the greenside bunker at fourteen ...he surrenders his lead ...a fine approach to fifteen saw him regain the initiative ...shaves the hole at seventeen...Brown drops a crucial twelve footer for birdie.

All-square going up the eighteenth ...two good drives. Euan's approach finds the back of the green - on the dance-floor, but some way from the band. Davis's second just misses the green on the left leaving him a tough up and down. A neat little pitch to eight feet ...will it be good enough? A beautifully weighted putt from distance by Euan leaves the game hanging in the balance and David's eight footer to take the contest to extra holes.

It slips past, missing by inches ...and with that film-star smile, we have a new champion!

It is exciting when a game goes to the last green. But when the outcome of the match is dependent on the last putt in the last game on the last green, it's nerve wracking. And despite a valiant effort by Barassie's anchor team, needing a win on the last to secure a halve game, they fell one stroke shot of golfing glory.

Alex Webster, the Nairn Captain, accepts the trophy from David Miller, his Barassie counterpart. Both Captain heaped praise on their players and whilst Nairn ran out victors on the day, the real winner was the continuing relationship between the two Clubs.

The contest will take place again in 2012, when both Clubs celebrate their 125th anniversary. So we can expect something a little bit special.

Patrick Tomisson certainly danced with the golfing gods at the par 4 fifth hole. An uncharacteristic power fade onto the beach meant Patrick would need all his imagination to get anything out of this hole ...at least the tide was out.

Around 200 yards from the green and ignoring the obvious comment, "don't forget to take your sand iron", Patrick selects a rescue club. Eighty yards to the coastal wall, rolling mounds and deep bunkers separate Patrick from his quest. A smooth swing and perfect contact see the ball rising like a bird towards the green. It lands pin-high but twenty yards to the right. A Mickelson type pitch to three feet followed by an putt sees Patrick secure an amazing par 4, which was in fact a net birdie.

What a shot Patrick ...Well Done!!!

Colin MacGregor Snr became the darling of the Nairn team with a Hole in One at the par 3 eleventh hole. The seventh Ace in an enjoyable career, Colin was quite nonchalant about this holy grail of all golfers. "I just dinked a little rescue club," said Colin. "I knew it was close ...but delighted to pick the ball from the hole."

Sadly, Colin and his partner, Ian Hutcheson, couldn't maintain the euphoria of the occasion and went down 4 & 2 to Fraser Williamson and Jim Beardall.

Seen here with a small libation, at least he could savour some solace for some time.

Is Norman Brown a name feared in the northern golfing circles? ...especially after his escapades at Boat of Garten on Friday and his 72 at Nairn on Saturday.

Partnering Vice-Captain, Douglas Orr in Match

Two, NCB posted his colours to a very early mast. A straight drive followed by an below-average iron left him 25 yards short of the green. He pulls out his putter, takes again and canons an effort that damages the pin and drops for an opening birdie three.

Has our boy peaked too early? Who remembers to Dave Narey 'toe-poke' against Brazil in the 1982 World Cup? And what happened then? Will this be the 'deju vu' in golf? Will Messrs Cooper and Tomisson be the Zico and Joninho of Nairn? Six birdies in the next eight holes would say, Yes! Three more birdies on the back nine says, Yes ...again! And the shot of the day ...from the beach at the fifth hole says, Super-Yes!

The battling Ayrshire duo did, however, manage to keep the gap to two holes at the turn. Oh, the benefits of an excellent, though silent partner, Norman.

It is always the sign of a keenly contested game of golf when the players march down the last fairway. But at one point, Captain David Miller might have been excused for thinking that it's a nice day for a game golf.

Four down at the turn, the match looked over for the Barassie Team. But DJM, who is in two match-play finals at Barassie, is not one to take things lying down. Steady, but attacking play saw the dynamic duo claw back three of the eight holes. Could Findlay Rankin maintain his re-found form and consistent putting stroke?

One down ...one to play ...can they do it?

A cannon-ball drive, left on centre was the ideal start to this 516 yard monster ...but just outside the range for a green-splitting 3-wood. A cautious lay-up meant a perfect sand wedge to the target. On in three, eight feet from the hole, but a tricky putt.

Alex and George secure a classic par and David has 96 inches between him and a halve match. Will he remember what his putting coach has been telling him?

Soft grip ...relaxed stance ...pick your spot ...smooth stroke! The putt drops and its honours even.

Under sunny skies, light breezes and what good be described as perfect conditions the best of Kilmarnock Barassie young talent secured an emphatic win over their Ayr Bellisle Golf Club neighbours.

Inclement weather earlier in the week forced a change of venue from a drenched Largs, Kelburne to the more sandy greens and fairways of Prestwick St Nicholas. The pin placements were challenging ...the undulating greens provided the ideal challenge for these future champions.

Credit must go to Barassie Junior Convener, Craig Gilmour who put the boys through an intensive pre-match preparation which included 'course management skills', a key element in the winning of the trophy. Craig actually played a few practice holes with each of the boys to get them into the correct mental frame of mind, and ensure they were bonding as a team.

Craig highlighted two areas which were pivotal in Kilmarnock Barassie's triumph ...Euan Henderson's putting; he slotting everything from 10 feet and under; Euan Walker's ball striking was superb and saw him drop only one hole in his match and that was to an eagle 3 at the Par 5 eleventh.

With a complete team of under 16-year old super stars, this is only the second time in the 41 year history that Barassie has seized the trophy.

As your golfing superstars will freely admit, a major amount of their success is attributed to the coaching staff ...Bill Sherry and Assistant Professional David Addison, take a bow!!

However, as has always been said, what do you do after you have won the cup?? Retain it!!

Findlay Rankin, who had last been seen on Saturday wandering in the undergrowth on the 18th, was paired with Barassie Captain, David Miller. Their opposition ...Captain Alex Webster and Past Captain George Asher ...a formidable duo indeed!!

You have played well ...beaten Par. You have played badly ...want to slit your wrists. But ask any golfer and they will tell you there is nothing better after any round is a beer with your chums in the famous 'Nineteenth Hole'. They will analyse every putt, every drive, the one that got away, why the golfing gods contrived to make you take three in a bunker ...all great chat and makes the round worth while.

None more so than after the first round of matches, which saw the honours evenly divided at three points each. Alex Webster, Captain of Nairn Golf Club (pictured right), welcomed the Ayrshire team and thanked them for the spirited way they played out their matches, seeking solace in a cheeky Chardonnay for coming a galant second in his own match.

Kilmarnock Barassie Captain, David Miller, replied thanking their hosts for their hospitality as well as recognising the superb condition of the golf course. He also paid tribute to all the staff, both greens and clubhouse, who help make Day One such a success. He did make special mention of Eddie at the ninth green where he was dispensing well-needed sustenance of the liquid variety.

The draw was also made for the following day's pairing, which saw some interesting and savoury matches.

Suffice to say that the whole Barassie team wanted to say a huge 'Thank You' to the Nairn players. Great food ...superb company ...tremendous hospitality ...good golf ...and an amazing libation.

The first points of this biennial match are posted by the Barassie Captain's team.

Capitalising on their position of strength, again the Barassie Boys played the 17th very solidly, securing a 3&1 win over the hosts.

Whilst magnanimous in defeat, Alex and Ian gracious shook hands and recognised that perhaps the better team on the day triumphed.

A lot of good golf was played ..and in good spirit.

Everyone enjoyed the golf, the course and the challenge, but most of all the friendly way the match was played.

Nairn's back-nine boasts a par of 36 and 3350 yards (off the medal tees). Modest by modern standards but woe betide the player who takes this piece of golfing architecture lightly. Punishing rough, hidden bunkers and undulating greens are only one part of this demanding inward half.

While a mere 36 inches longer than the eighth, number ten did at least have the benefit of a following wind ...enough for David and Ian to comfortably reach the green with a drive and a middle iron. Alex was comfortably placed on the front edge and two putts secured Nairn a net birdie four and a halve.

The eleventh hole, 'Gate', a 160 yard awkward par 3 needs a bit of planning, especially with the pin placed to the right, over the front mount, twenty feet on, but perilously close to a green-side pot bunker. All four tee-shots were there, or there abouts.

First to play was Douglas ... a consistent putter at the best of times, and with a reputation of reading the greens and subtle borrows with a magical consistency. A nod of the head ...balanced feet ...smooth stroke ...birdie two!! Valiant attempts from the opposition failed to match the score and Barassie take a two hole lead.

At that devilish 13th 'coronary hill' hole, where the air seemed to get thinner the higher, and slower you climb, Ian halved the deficit, copy-book style ...long penetrating drive; high floating mid-iron to the plateau part of the green; two solid putts ...job done.

However. the match turned on the 16th. Wayward shots from the deadly duo from Nairn meant the hole was not just lost, but gifted to their gritty opponents, with a simple par.

DAY ONE AND ON THE TEE............

The first tee-shot in the first game can always be a worry. Hole One, 'Sea' by name, with of the crashing waves on the rocks no more than 30 yards from the hallowed turf stretches and a mere 395 generous yards ...bunkers left, bunkers right ...oh, and the North Sea.

Barassie Vice-Captain, Douglas Orr struck the first blow for glory ...true, straight and very much in play ...followed by the 'big hitters', Barassie, Captain David Miller and Ian Cooper, the Nairn Vice-Captain, both of whom powered drives down the opening fairway. Alex Webster, the Nairn Captain, and last to drive had mixed feelings about his shot, much to the derision of his team. However, a soft, controlled 9-iron from DM for his approach to three feet saw the visitors take first advantage.

The match ebbed and flowed, but never to the advantage of Nairn until the 495 yard Par 5 seventh with the creatively-thought name of 'Long', which I suppose it was, really ...into a 30 mph into the wind. Ian Cooper, certainly no slouch with his woods, needed two cannons with his driver to reach the front edge of the subtlety manicured green. Uncharacteristic slack slots from the Barassie team saw both on the dance floor, but not within singing distance of the band. Down in regulation figures was not good enough, with Ian's two-putt birdie restoring the match position back to square.

With honours even at the eighth with its challengingly contoured green and sprayed tee-shots at the ninth seemingly being the order of the moment, DM floated a magical shot from the left rough, over the bunker-protected left corner of the green to three feet. A tap-in restores the advantage to the Ayrshire hombres.

One up at the turn...and small surprise in store! Eddie, from the Nairn Green Staff, had plethora of snacks for the weary golfer ...coffee, sandwiches and a wee drop of John Barleycorn to set the pace for the back-nine.

NAIRN V KILMARNOCK BARASSIE - DAY ONE

Kilmarnock Barassie and Nairn Golf Clubs have a long association, going back one hundred and twenty three years. Both Clubs were constituted in 1887, hence the biennial contest.

The format for the match is fourball better- ball of six matches, the Club with the most points winning an attractive port decanter, which was donated by Past-Captain, Stewart Lightbody.

Traditional has it that the first match out is contested between the Captains and Vice Captains of both Clubs. The game teed-off at 1.30pm under what would be described as 'challenging conditions'. The sky was grey, the wind was strong and gusting and blowing from the North East.

While the September weekend holiday has normally been the date for the biennial match between Kilmarnock Barassie and Nairn golf clubs, eight intrepid golfers from the Ayrshire club opted to journey north a day early and stop at one of the hidden gems of the Highlands and take the opportunity to hone their skills for the oncoming encounter.

Boat of Garten is just a few minutes from the tourist-rich town of Aviemore and has been the mecca for visitors from home and abroad for years. Set within the Cairngorm mountains 'The Boat', as it is locally known, was wonderfully presented, was featured in Scotland's top 40 courses in 2008 and bears the accolade of 'the Gleneagles of the North'. It is recognised as one of the masterpieces of golfing icon, James Braid, and features a superbly and individually sculptured eighteen holes.

Nevertheless, our wannabe golfing superstars opted for a Stableford competition format, off full handicap, playing in two matches of four. And just for a little added interest, they also decided to have a fourball better-ball match with in the each group.

The first match paired Howard Kewney and Billy Gibson locking horns with Scott Faulds and well-known Barassie stalwart NC Brown. Norman's team triumphed, with NCB amassing a generous 31 points, well below his expected best.

Match two brought together the Captain and Vice Captain who, with their prodigious length, delicate short-game and eye for the hidden borrows on the fast greens would joust against George Hamilton, who didn't quick fire on all cylinders and Findlay Rankin. The 'Officials' ran out worthy winners by one hole.
But the 'Big Winner' and champion for the day ...Findlay Rankin. Will he hold his form over the weekend? Have the skills been perfected?

The Club ran a similar event last year which was a great success and was enjoyed by everyone that attended. Why not bring along some friends and have a fun night.

ACES HIGH FOR ALAN WELSH!!!

Eighteen year old Alan Welsh, the 2009 Junior Champion, and still a member of Cathkin's young stallions, birdied 11 ...and 12 ... then has a 'hole in one' at the 155 yard par three 13th.

Unassumingly, Alan said, "I kinda slid-in a soft 6-iron. I thought I was close, especially after seeing Greg's (from Barassie) tee shot. It was all-over the pin, and I was on the same line.'

Veteran campaigner, Norman Brown from Barassie and 46 years Alan's senior, when seeking solice in a welcoming pint of Fosters, was heard to comment, "Great, it was a brilliant shot. Just to think I've got socks older than him."

Well done to Alan.

Los Ninjos from Cathkin went on to secure a victory by two holes.

A WHITER SHADE OF PALE

The other matches saw Cathkin's Martin McCrory and Roy Vallance triumph over Stuart Dixon and Barry Wilson by 3 &1, while the home team of Gordon Wallace and Andy Matthews put Jim Trotter and John Rushbury down by 5&4.

However, at the end of the day its now about winning or losing (though we all like to win), the real winner is the game of golf and the relationships that are established.

ALL SQUARE GOING DOWN THE LAST

The match could not have been tighter ...not could it have been played in a more friendly spirit.

One down, with one to play and it was obvious Barassie would need to birdie the last hole if they were to have any chance of a halved match.

Flushed with their success on the seventeenth, Barassie had the honour and teed-up first ...the confidence was high. Two excellent drives split the fairway and would open-up the green for an approach. Cathkin matched the length of their opponents, but only one ball was on the fairway.

HIT THE GREEN! ...HIT THE GREEN!

It is a blind approach shot. The Vice Captain selects a seven iron. Smooth swing ...solid contact ...safely on the green, twenty feet to the left. The Captain's nine iron soars high, with a slight draw ...fifteen feet short, but an uphill putt.

Their Cathkin opponents had mixed fortunes ...one in the green-side bunker, the other twenty-five feet short, but maybe a par will be good enough.

Alan s to play first, and considering his previous effort would be expect that this was his time. He strikes firmly, but fails to drops, missing to the left by inches.

MAKE THE PUTT?

The Vice is up first, and even with an assured idea of the line and the weight, sadly his effort pulls up just short. 'How can you be short?', he says, in disbelief.

It's all down the DJM and the final shot of the round. Can he duplicate the success of the previous hole? What was a perfectly struck putt takes a wicked turn to the right inches from the cup and Cathkin take the match by one hole.

Congratulatory hand-shakes see the conclusion to an altogether enjoyable encounter.

There is still the main matches going on behind, however.

TWO DONE ...TWO TO PLAY!

Four good tee shots. One good approach shot ...by the Barassie Captain. The 'supporting acts' are on in three and putting for par.

Martin Hughes, the Cathkin Captain, is getting a shot. He two putts for a net four, leaving DJM needing a birdie to win. David plays the true Captain's part, drops the putt and its off to the eighteenth with a chance to salvage a halved match in the very tight encounter.

AN INSPIRATIONAL DECISION?

It is usual practice to swop the lead player after the first nine, but Captain David Miller, ever the optimist, elected to keep his own team's rota as before, with the Vice Captain taking the lead on the tenth tee.
Would this be an inspired decision ...or disaster for Barassie?
The choice seemed a good one, with Barassie squaring the match.
However, a couple a slack from from Barassie allowed the home team to regain their two hole advantage on the fourteenth tee.

ALAN LOSES THE HEAD!!

Fortune certainly went Cathkin's way down fifteen, when the head and the shaft of his pitching wedge parted company ...the head went to sand while ball went the green. A resultant two-putt saw the hole halved.

BARASSIE versus CATHKIN BRAES - THE ANNUAL ENCOUNTER

The match between Barassie and Cathkin is steeped in history and tradition, going back more than ninety year. Played annually at alternative venues, the encounter has always been a keenly contested affair.

On Sunday, three pairings plus the Captain's match left the sunny shores of their idyllic Links and headed for the lofty heights and rolling plains of North Lanarkshire, where the thinner air was sure to make the ball fly further (or is that Switzerland?)

The match is played as a scratch format with no strokes engaged, with the exception of the Captain's match, this being seen as more of a social encounter.

The first hole sees a blind tee-shot to a narrow landing area and witnessed three fairway-splitting drives, the exception being the Vice Captain who elected a more intriguing if not scenic route down the left. Being stroke index three, the ploy was to hit the green in three an putt for at best a par four, gross or net. The outcome nevertheless was a halve.

THE EARLY ADVANTAGE GOES TO CATHKIN

Back-to-back birdies at holes three and four gave Cathkin a two lead. A dinky little par three, populated by a few of our feathered friends, who could have been flown in specially for the day from 'www.rentaswan.com' was halved, before Barassie reduce the deficit with a superb birdie on the 506 yard par five sixth. Though Cathkin immediately hit back with a birdie at uphill and difficult seventh, it was honours even at eight and another immaculately made birdie putt by the Vice Captain at the ninth, to again reduce the lead.

The score at the turn is Cathkin one hole to the good, but all to play for!

SEMI-FINAL ACTION FROM THE AYRSHIRE SUMMER LEAGUE

Carrying a slender two point lead from the first leg of this intriguing battle, Barassie entered the fray as favourites to progress to the final of the Ayrshire Summer League Competition. Two and a half points would be enough to take then to mouth-watering encounter with Irvine Bogside.

Six brave souls were bound for glory or golfing oblivion ...no one ever wants to be a losing semi-finalist. Young bucks and golfing maturity held Barassie's answer to this encounter.

Suffering from jet-lag and just returned from holiday in the sunny temperatures of Egypt, Jamie MacKay not only led the charge but also posted first blood with an emphatic 8&6 win over his oppenent.

Newly-crowned Club Champion and 'veteran' (if only by years) Robbie Fulker demonstrated yet again he can mix it with the youngsters gaining a well-deserved half point on the final green.

ONE POINT REQUIRED!!

Euan Brown!! Late nights and golfing Sunday's don't mix too well. However you are forgiven for carving your first drive out of bounds and then recording a comfortable 5&3 triumph.

JOB DONE!!! But there are still statistics out on the course!!!

Recovering from an uncharacteristically wild start to his round, Stuart Miller regained his composure and maintain his impressive record in this competition. His 5&3 win was putting some icing on Barassie's cake.

Perhaps Andrew Wright had been partaking of a small libation at the same welcoming hostelry as Euan, as he also scared the residents of the adjacent Whins Road when he sent his first drive out of bounds. Sadly this was an indicator of his forthcoming struggle, finally succumming at the 16th.

The mighty-hitting Calum Sharp played the anchor match, sporty a nattily design skin-coloured hat. His consistency of play saw him past his opponent by the comfort margin of 5&3.

So, Well Done, our local heroes and let's take this quality of power into the final.

The date for the final has still to be agreed, but Members are asked to watch the usual information channels and come to support their Team.

MAGNANIMOUS IN DEFEAT ...AND VICTORY!!!

Barassie Captain David Miller presents the unique Combined Operations Trophy to the Brian Dennison, Captain of the winning team.

Both David and Brian were magnanimous in their recognition of the matches, the players, the course and the hospitality accorded to everyone. The Club has an excellent culinary reputation and its catering and bar staff at Barassie were singled out for all their work.

The Captains recognised the continuing bond between an all four clubs and were grateful to the original efforts of the troops but in 1945.

When the trophy is contested next year at Prestwick Golf Club, whilst the competition will be as intense the winner always be the Royal and Ancient game that hooks us every weekend.

Will Western did it again? There are three other Clubs and three new teams who will have a definite say in the matter.

CAN THE BARASSIE CAPTAIN SHOW HIS TROOPS THE WAY?

Had the golfing gods something mind as they contrived to pit the local heroes of the host club against the holders and pre-match favourites?

Like the first series of matches, both teams got off to a shaky and uncharacteristic start, slightly wayward tee-shot requiring the recovery prowess of ever-patient and understanding partners. All three matches ebbed and flowed through the first twelve greens, with never more than a single hole separating the contest. This was characterised at the eleventh, recognised as the most difficult green on the course with its humps and hollows, bumps and swales, when Western's Johnston Sime contrived a most immaculate putt. All of fifty feet and on far side of the green, halve-way to the hole it was obvious there no other destination for the ball but the hole. A 'well done' from their Barassie opponents and a modest applause from the sole spectator was all that rewarded such an outrageous achievement ...apart from a modest degree of triumphalism from Johnston. That took the match back to all-square. However, the gritty duo of Ron Punton and Al Glennie did get their reward finally winning by one hole.

Barassie's other matches did not go so well. Graham Hope and Greg Niven fell to their Western counterparts by two holes, which was a repeat of their morning result against Royal Troon. Reg Short and partner John Rushbury sadly succumbed down the difficult and final six holes of the Barassie Links course. They are not the first, and certainly won't be the last, to falter along this challenging piece of golfing real estate, finally losing by three holes.

Both teams showed resilience under pressure, with Western finally coming out on top by four holes and retain the Combined Operations Trophy. Well Done, to them.

A VALIANT EFFORT SEES PRESTWICK CLAIM THIRD PLACE

A deluge of rain greeted the teams to the tee as the play-off match between Prestwick and Troon was about to get under way. Whilst the torrent stopped as quickly as it started, it was a little moderate of overindulgence at lunchtime that saw the opening few drives find the rough and the bunkers. It was finally Paul McPail, in match three, who found the fairway to steady the ship and set the pace for a comfortable win for Prestwick by three holes. Sadly Paul's match went against him as he and his partner fell to a late resurgence from Messrs Anderson and Paton of Troon.

It was well done to both teams as they took on the challenge of Barassie's demanding championship course.

WHO WILL TRIUMPH?

As is traditional, the Captains of the four Clubs enjoy a more sociable 18 holes in the afternoon, before the golfing gladiators take centre stage. I am assured that this is nothing to do with the Chardonnay and a couple of glasses of Kummel, just to was down the end of a very tasty meal.

Four amazing good drives from the leaders set the example which they hoped would be emulated by the troops.

THE SCORES FROM THE MORNING MATCHES

As has been said, a key part of the match is the merriment, enjoying the competition, playing as well as you can, followed by a tasty lunch, a cheeky Chardonnay and asking yourself ...if only that putt had dropped? ...why did I leek that shot to the right? ...why did my partner not hit the green from 100 yards? ...is it only a game? ...what will happern this afternoon?

In the first group of matches Western Gailes triumphed over Prestwick - by a credible score of four up. The second set of matches saw hosts Barassie take the honours over Royal Troon by seven up. While an excellent result, there is still the afternoon matches to contend with. (As an aside, yes, one swallow did not make a Summer, and Graham and Greg saw their advantage slip over the closing holes, losing by two.

The afternoon matches therefore see the hosts, Barassie, take on the holder, Western. Will it be a play-off for the minor places between Troon and Prestwick. Golf can be an unpredictable game sometime and we will see around 6 o'clock.

A STRONG START FROM THE HOSTS

In the second group of matches, Graham Hope got the Barassie challenge into gear, against local rivals, Royal Troon. One of the Club's hopefuls for golfing immortality, if Barassie was to triumph for the first time in nine years, split the fairway with a searing drive.

He and partner, Greg Niven went on to take first blood in this intriguing encounter, with a birdie four. Have they peaked too soon? Time will be the judge.

THE HOLDERS GET THE COMPETITION UNDERWAY

Under a sunny morning sky but with a challenging, prevailing and strong westerly breeze, Alan Calder from Western Gailes got the 65th playing of the Combined Operations Trophy under way.

A long, straight and true drive was the result, but what else would you expect from the competition favourites. However, not to be outdone, Ken Wilson, his opposite number from Prestwick was equally prodigious, bringing the 500-yard par 5 first within range in two. Two-ball fouresomes is very much a team game, so let's hope both pair are still talking to each other after their morning round. Catch up in a few hours and all will be revealed.

The Combined Operations Trophy - now in its 65th year

During the Second World War, British troops, in including commandos, were stationed in the Troon and Irvine area. In fact, the Clubhouse at Kilmarnock (Barassie) acted as the sergeants mess, as did other golf clubs offer their own hospitality.

The troops wanted to find a way to recognise everything that was done for them. The apprentices of the day designed and built a model 'military landing craft' as a trophy, which was to be competed for annually by the four clubs involved - Western Gailes, Barassie, Troon and Prestwick.

The first match took place in 1945 with Western Gailes the winners. Western are the current holders. Barassie's first triumph came in 1946, with the last victory in 2001.

It is keenly contested and with an individual format. Each Club has six players, and therefore three teams of two who then compete with a selected Club in a foursomes match. The draw is made first thing in the morning on the competition day. Matches are played to a finish, with the total number of holes up for the three matches being recorded. In the afternoon, the two highest Club results play against each other, as do the two lowest. The final outcome could be a complete turn of fortune, because of the same scoring method.

For example, Troon could be ten holes up against Prestwick from the morning round, and looking good for a victory ...but lose by five holes in the afternoon, to see their hopes dashed into misery. Western could have a morning triumph of four holes ...and with a win over Troon in the afternoon by five hole could be certain to retain the trophy. However, there is always the danger in the background of a massive swing, giving Barassie an outright victory.

Now I hope you all follow that ...at least the Clubs do.

However, jollyness and merriment really is the order of the day, with 'guid fayre and few drams' being partaken.

Who will win tomorrow? The favourites must be Western, but you never know with this noble game of golf.

Kilmarnock (Barassie) Clubhouse undergoes a major facelift

The Clubhouse at Barassie has witnessed many changes over the years. New lockers, extended lounges, new bar area, extended dining room ...adding a bit here and there, changing an entrance, knocking a bit down, building a bit back up.

In 1921, for example, carpets replaced linoleum, and heating and electric lighting were installed. The list goes on, with improvements to the overall fabric of the Clubhouse, as the needs were identified.

However. times have changed, priorities have changed, costs and budgets have changed, the environment continues to change. It was with this in mind the Club elected to replace the windows, in some cases the original windows, with more heat and solar efficient PVCu double-glazed units. Almost every window in the building is being replaced ...that totals more than 50 units.

Some of the windows are also being 'reconfigured' with different style mullions and astragals, which is certain to improve the view from the Clubhouse as well make the lounges and dining room much brighter.

Because the sealed units have a significantly high insulation value, there are also likely to consider savings made on the cost of heating.

The replacement windows are just one part of ambitious plans the Club currently has under consideration to upgrade the quality and fabric of the building. It is hoped a carefully maintained budget will allow other projects to proceed and increase the reputation Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club has for offering warm and welcoming hospitality to its members and to those who continue to visit the Club.

A GREAT FINAL AND A WORTHY LADIES CHAMPION

Under threaten skies and viewed by a consider support from the Ladies Section Alison Gemmill triumphed for an incredible 22nd time, taking the Ladies Club Championship from debutante Debbie Peberdy at the 19th hole, following a titanic tussle when the match ebbed and flowed constantly.First blood went to Alison when her opponent nervously three-putted from close range at the 2nd hole. However, with grit and determination Debbie fought back to take a one hole advantage at the 5th before Alison squared the match with a superb up-and-down from a greenside bunker at the par 3 sixth.

That seemed to inspire the multi-time winner. A combination of accurate tee-shots and positive iron play saw her winning four holes in succession from the eight and take, what should have been a decisive lead, against her much less experienced opponent.

Not to be outdone, Debbie staged an amazing fight-back began winning 14, 15 and 16. Now on the last tee she was only one down. A shock was on the cards. Two beautiful shots took Debbie comfortably to the green, though still some way from the hole. Alison’s tee-shot found sand and although she found the putting surface in three, the fight-back was complete when two putts secured a winning par to take the match up the 19th.

The first extra hole was not short of drama. Debbie seemingly played herself out of the match after her third shot cannoned through the green. Holding her nerve she pitched to 15 feet and bravely holed for a par 5.
A twelve foot winning birdie now stood between Alison and the title. A confident stroke saw the roll into the middle of the hole.

Both Ladies provided a highly entertaining and competitive match, played in great spirit and watched by a appreciate crowd.

Superb rounds of 79 and 72 saw him tie on 151 with Euan Walker. However, one under par on the three-hole playoff, saw David take the title for the first time.

Tied on 151 for the two rounds, the boys headed for the first of the playoff holes. Despite uncharacteristic wayward drives both hit superb second shots and recorded birdie fours.

The second of the playoff holes saw David launch a mighty 260 yard drive into the wind. Whilst Euan blocked his tee-shot right, he found a good lie and crunched a 7-iron onto the green, 30 feet from the pin. David took a more conservative approach, leaving his approach 18 feet short. Euan’s putt stopped 3 feet short. When his next putt lipped-out and his opponent’s was plumb centre and dropped, it was advantage.

David.Safe play from David and cavalier attacking shots from Euan still saw the title go David’s way for his first home victory.

Robbie Fulker rolled back the years to take the Club Championship for the fourth time. He triumphed by two strokes over his younger opponents ...younger by more than 40 years.

A superb round of 77 during the worst of the wind on Saturday, followed by a one-under par 71 on Sunday gave Robbie a well-deserved victory. Leading contender after day one, Jim Milligan, who was in the final match with Robbie said he had never seen him play so well in the wind. “Seldom did his shots go above 20 feet,” said Jim. “He controlled the conditions superbly.”

Robbie’s first title was back in 1982, at the tender age of 36, followed by successes in 1989 and 2003. I am sure Robbie won’t mind me saying it, but at 64 it shows that senior golf still has a lot to offer.

Will 2011 be title number five? It just would not surprise me ...and many of the members!!

Zephyrus, the Greek god of the west wind, certainly had an input into the destination of the many Championship titles held over this weekend at Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club. Gusting to over 30mph for most of Saturday and Sunday, the conditions increased the challenge for the four Championships, decided annually over this weekend, the Men’s Club Championship, the Junior Championship, the Ladies Club Championship and the McLean Trophy.

Just seven days on from the glorious weather and excellent golf played at the final of the Boys Amateur Championship, 35 of Kilmarnock Barassie’s best took to the links to contest the first round of 36 holes to decide the Club Champion for 2010.

The field included past winners, county and international players. Barassie can, in fact, boast a wealth of golfing talent.In what could only be described as a torrid wind, the first group teed-off at 8.30.

The greens were slick, having been cut only a short time earlier. Whilst the first proved a relative kind start for the players, from there it was downhill, and who could manoeuvre themselves and their golf ball better than the rest.

The top 24 scores qualify for the second round, played on Sunday, and the cut, being wholly wind dependent, was as expected higher than normal. Jim Milligan, ex-Walker Cup player leads the field, together with Past Captain James Morrison with a superb 76, given the conditions. Robbie Fulker trailed by a shot with the remaining 21 players fighting for the minor places.

Tomorrow is another day ...the forecast is similar ...around 4 o’clock we will have the 2010 Champion. Who will be? The jury, at the moment is still out

Everything is back to ‘normal’, is there is a normal at Barassie at the moment, with a lot of ambitious plans in the pipeline. All the paraphernalia has gone; the only things to be left to go are the Portakabins.

The Captain and your intrepid reporter ventured out to test the Links, the speed of the greens and ferocity of the pin positions. Our better ball was 69, which included six birdies; not too bad for a couple of 'mature' guys and would give those 'youngsters' a run for their money

Even with a slightly biased hat on, Barassie is an excellent advert for links golf and is certainly worthy of a visit from all you golf addicts.

David Miller, Captain of Kilmarnock Barassie Golf Club, in his speech made reference the contribution the Club continues make in supporting Junior Golf and thanked the R&A for selecting Barassie to host the Championship.

He complemented both players on the way they, and all the other boys conducted themselves in such a proper manner, emphasising they were a credit to the game of golf, their countries, their associations and most of all themselves.

His closing words paid tribute and thanks to all the many volunteers and Championship Committee who made the tournament such a success.

‘Finally, for the efforts of Glen Ranson, Club Steward and his staff, Ruby Rowan, Club Caterer and her staff, Gregor Howie, Club Professional and his merry men and Club Secretary, Donald Wilson and the administrative team, I must say a very big, Thank You,’ added David, 'but I couldn't close without recognising the work of Brian and his greenstaff who got the course into superb condition for the Championship. The 'big man', I know, had many a sleepless night thinking about the winter damage, especially to the greens, the lack of rain just a few weeks from the competition. Brian, you are your guys, did an amazing job; the club is proud of everything. The comments of the players and the R&A says it all. As our Spanish winner would say, muchas gracias y bien hecho!'

A GARDEN OF EDEN??

During his acceptance speech, the new Champion acknowledged the contribution of the Spanish Academy of Golf, his coach, his caddy and his parents back in Spain. He also spoke well of everyone involved with Kilmarnock Barassie, complementing the quality of the course singling the ‘gardener’, Brian Findlayson.

Brian has been called many a thing, but never a gardener ...Alan Titchmarsh look out??

It’s never difficult to have sympathy for the ‘one who came second’ ...after battling through the two qualifying rounds and five games of match-play to fall just short.

On the day, Adrian proved too strong. Max can be proud of his efforts, always knowing, at only 17, he will have a great chance next year when the Championship goes to Burnham & Berrow.

I am not sure what they are feeding their young golfers in Spain, or what they are putting in the paella, but they are making them big and strong (SGU take note). His caddy, who also played in the Championship, tops the scale at over 13 stone, is over six foot in height ...and is only 15! He will be eligible to play in another two Championships, and must be a certain prospect for the title.

Adrian proved certainly a worthy winner and has a great future in golf. However, having a post-victory chat with Adrian, he still has his feet on the ground. Not 18 under later in the year, he spoke very maturely about remaining amateur for a while and taking guidance from his coach before considering turning his efforts to the professional ranks.

A pulled drive to the left down 15 presented Max with a challenge and a decision. Should he play out sideways just short of the green and hope a pitch and putt? Should he take-on the challenge of the tall trees that blocked his direct route to the green and hope for a birdie at best? After all, he did drop a superb putt a few hours earlier. Like a brave cavalier, Max opted for the aerial route, only to see his ball fall to earth.

Adrian, meanwhile hit towering wedge to 18 feet short of the hole ...advantage Espana!

With pure golfing genius, Max, not from the best of lies in the rough and also with a wedge, sends his ball 15 feet past the hole ...there is still a title to play for!!

The bogey 6 at the first must have served as wake-up call to the young Spaniard as he contrived to win four out of the next seven holes. However, he failed make par on the ninth, three-putting for a bogey five, albeit from a very difficult position. It might be fair to assume this would be his least favourite hole on the testing Links Course at Barassie, as he also bogeyed in the morning round to lose the hole.

It is always an advantage to attack the last 6 holes at Barassie. And so it proved with five out of the last six changing hands, it some cases rather cheaply. Par figures were good enough at 13, 14, 16 and 17, while 15 was won with a superb birdie putt from the most difficult of positions.

At 14, Max’s hopes were nearly buried in the sand when he took two to get out of a green-side bunker. At 16 his putt lipped out, as did a very tidy effort at the last of the first 18.

Spaniard Adrian Otaegui takes a one hole advantage into lunch. Whilst round in 71 as against 73, Adrian had a hard-fought battle against his German opponent. Both players were steady through the first 9, reaching the turn all-square. A bit of fluctuating fortunes saw the game move to Adrian's advantage.
